You could say it was worse than Custer's Last Stand or you could say it was the greatest Native American victory! With either perspective, after the Battle on the Wabash, the United States had only three hundred soldiers to man its westernmost forts from Cincinnati to Louisville to Vincennes.
With the end of the Revolutionary War the far west beckons to many. Among the homesteaders, farmers, adventurers and former soldiers is Landis James, a veteran estranged from his Philadelphia merchant father, who settles in the Kentucky borderlands.
But these newcomers are encroaching on on lands ceded to the Native Americans by treaty; to them it is an outright invasion. Encouraged and armed by the British, the many tribes must unite to defend their homeland.
In 1790, President Washington sends an army into the wilderness to fight the Indians. They are defeated by the Miami, Shawnee and other tribes. In 1791 he sends a new army. Landis James, now a captain, heads back into the northern forests with many of his fellow Kentuckians to even the score. An Army Lost is a fictional account of the men, women and children who trekked north with the army on this little known campaign and is the first in a series following the James family during the early days of the American Republic.

I am attracted to books of early American history and found this historical narrative about the Indian Wars Period following the American Revolution to be particularly interesting. I have read a great deal of this time period but mostly of a non-fiction nature. In most cases I could determine the deviance from the "real story" in An Army Lost, but in other cases I need to dig further to see if there was embellishment for interest - gun duel with St.Clair army supplier? The author made this reader care about the characters, so I look forward to the next book to find out what happens to the main character who, at the conclusion of "An Army Lost," had just made a reappearance. When the reader wants to read the next in the series, it indicates a successful effort on the part of the author. For those who might not know the story of the St. Clair fiasco and the congressional investigation that followed it, this would be an interesting introduction. Hopefully, it would also lead those readers to the real "history" books of Wabash 1791 by Winkler and The Victory With No Name by Callaway.

An exciting, well researched, and well written book about the post revolution times that focused on the experiences of both the American soldiers and the Indians before, during and after battle. This is an intimate insight into the lives of those who may have fought those battles. An excellent read.
This book made me experience all five of my favorite emotions happy, sad, surprised, and scary! The setting and the characters blend together really nicely too. Right when you think the plot is linear, there is always a twist in the most unpredictable spots. Moral of the story don't get lost if you're in the army.

Overall rating 6 stars. unfortunately, this website only lets me do five starts.
This book really delves into uncharted territory and the author is so wonderfully gifted as a storyteller that a couple points in the story really hit home personally and gave me pause for a couple days. He approaches the material like Tolstoy, so be patient because it's worth the wait.
Great historical fiction based on true accounts. Made a great read with a fairly even handed approach to the conflict that allows us to understand the motives and human failures of both sides. I'm getting ready to read the second in the series.
I was born and raised in the area of the Battle of Wabash. I am a descendent of the officers in the battle. I found the book very true to the actual events, but the fictional characters add suspense and help tell this great American story. This would make a great movie or TV series. It would be a sort of 'The Patriot' does 'Braveheart'.

The perspective of Indian families of the era is true to life as well. This is a great history lesson in addition to entertaining.
This is a slice of American history that surprised. How could there have been a worse slaughter of an American army by native Americans than Custer on the Little Big Horn? How could it happen? Well, author Paper tells it all, in vivid detail. He takes care to make sure you know intimately the characters on both sides of the battle-mortal enemies all. So when the two factions finally meet, to say you're emotionally involved is an understatement!
We’ve seen countless tales and movies about the U.S. and its battles with the Plains Indians, but very little of the struggles between the Native Americans and settlers moving west into the Ohio and Kentucky territories. Pioneers and politicians called it empty land open for settlement but the Shawnee and Miami tribes called it invasion. An Army Lost is the story of the clash between two peoples that want the same land.
